Event Description:

Agnes Revisited: The Performance, hosted by the Bucknell Humanities Center

Tropical Storm Agnes (1972) transformed our Susquehanna Valley. In this virtual performance, based on historical records and oral histories with survivors of the storm, we revisit Agnes, commemorate a historic event, and glean the lessons it has for today's rapidly changing world.

AGNES REVISITED will transform more than 30 interviews, hundreds of photographs, and dozens of newspaper articles from the days of Agnes into songs, monologues, scenes, dances, and more. Focusing on the central Susquehanna River Valley and its communities, the performance aims to preserve and share memories, stories, and wisdom from those who lived through Agnes. The performance will grow over the next year, with more stories and research collected, in preparation for a bigger event in 2022, the 50th anniversary of Agnes.

The creative team for this performance includes
  • Prof. F. Elaine Williams (Theatre and Dance, Bucknell)
  • Prof. Andrew Stuhl (Environmental Studies and Sciences, Bucknell)
  • Sandy Spieler (Director, Designer)
  • Bucknell students Bethany Fitch, Katrien Weemas, Clare McGowan, Lydia Palumbo, Orli Bernstein, Megan Munter, Mesa Ashton, John Owen, Tatumn Kohlbrenner, Cam Kittell

They are joined and directed by Gerard Stropnicky (Founding Member, Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble; Director of FLOOD STORIES and FLOOD STORIES, TOO). Many others have offered support, advice, and other guidance along the way.

AGNES REVISITED will not only be based on experiences of area community residents -- the cast will feature community leaders and Agnes survivors as well. This will truly be a performance of, by, and for the Susquehanna Valley.
