Quarterly Committee Update

Agriculture                                                              
  • Brainstorming other ways the Chamber can get involved with local agriculture.
  • Looking into the idea of how to get local restaurants, farms, growers, etc. PA Preferred.         
  • The Paella and Pollinator event was very successful; Zach would like to enhance on that experience by showcasing other local products at similar events throughout the year. 
  • Ag Luncheon coming back in 2024.

Business & Education                                         

  • Selinsgrove is acting as a pilot district for some of the programs the committee is working on. If there is success at Selinsgrove, it is easily transferred to another district.
  • The committee is developing career fair best practices for schools. If schools adopt these, it will make them more successful and sustainable events for their students.
  • There was a very successful career fair, which was held at Selinsgrove; there were over 30 employers present who matched the interests of the students.       
Communications & Technology                             
  • Still working on increasing activity with the ChamberMaster member portal.

  • Working on enhancing the roll of ambassadors, but this is a long-term goal.

Community Prosperity Alliance                             
  • Doing well with quarterly Lunch and Learn events, which are reaching a different downtown each quarter.
  • Federal and state funding available to help support the downtowns and their businesses – a grant writing series is in the works to help educate the downtowns on best practices for these funding opportunities.     
  • The next scheduled CPA event is in October

Events                                                           

  • Annual Young Americans Golf Tournament in September at Knoebels.

  • More ribbon cuttings have been popping up this year, which is exciting to see.
  • There are discussions about committee members serving as Chamber Ambassadors. Since they are already planning and attending events, they have their hand on the pulse and may be a great asset as Ambassadors.                                 
Governmental Affairs                                                  
  • Senator Lynda Schlegel Culver provided a budget update at the last meeting.
  • Solar was also discussed at the last meeting. The committee may create a subcommittee to continue the conversation.
  • Looking to bring back more in person meetings.             

GSV Young Professionals                                     

  • ​Paddle Party coming up on August 26th at Bic’s Watersports in Montandon. You do not need to be a Young Professional to attend; this event is open to anyone who is interested.

  • Working on having one event each month to provide more connections for local young professionals.          
  • The Leadership Susquehanna Valley and GSVYP groups have partnered together on some after-hours events, and they have been very successful.       
Transportation                                                                  
  • Continue to meet via Zoom, which seems to be working well. Average 20-25 people in attendance.
  • Trying to be a one-stop-shop for transportation issues. 
  • Planning and construction updates of the Thruway project, county maintenance issues, SEDA COG updates (TIFF & Grants), Penn Valley Airport Updates, Detour Updates, etc.      
  • Every month they have representation from local and state officials.    

 Women’s Leadership & ATHENA ®                         

  • The Annual Women’s Leadership Symposium is scheduled for October 10th at the Albright Center in Sunbury.

    • Sent out call for proposals for presenters at the event.
    • Working on free parking downtown for attendees.
    • Supporting local restaurants for lunch options.
  • Presenting ATHENA Award; nominations are open.

  • Still working on scheduling and planning lunch and learn events for the second half of the year.

Young Americans                                                       

  • The program ended in May with 72 Young Americans from 10 local schools.
  • The Leadership Seminar was a success as was the Banquet. The committee is looking forward to planning on how to improve the program for the coming school year.
