Community Gathers for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service

Elementary Coffee Shop buzzed with a little extra energy during the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service, as community members gathered to honor the legacy of the civil rights leader. Chamber member and Museum Director Alice Anne Schwab joined forces with Channel 27 host Janel Knight Trulear and Dauphin County Commissioner George Hartwick to inspire the next generation through the power of storytelling.

The highlight of the day was a special reading of A Place to Land by Barry Wittenstein. The poignant book, which tells the story of how Dr. King crafted his iconic "I Have a Dream" speech, captivated a packed house of children, parents, and grandparents. Attendees sat spellbound as Schwab, Knight Trulear, and Hartwick brought the words to life, weaving a narrative that emphasized hope, justice, and the importance of community action.

“The story reminds us that big dreams often start in quiet moments of reflection,” Schwab remarked, adding that events like these highlight the power of literature to inspire change.

The event, filled with warmth and camaraderie, underscored the importance of intergenerational dialogue in continuing Dr. King’s work. Following the reading, families explored the museum’s exhibits, sparking conversations about art, history, and equality.

Alice Anne remarked, “The Susquehanna Art Museum is proud to have been a part of this meaningful celebration, reaffirming its commitment to fostering community connection and honoring Dr. King’s enduring legacy. Attendees were even serenaded with an impromptu rendition of We Shall Overcome led by Chamber President Bob Garrett.”
