From Where I Sit…

by Bob Garrett

You’ve Got to See This!

Knowledge is all a matter of building bridges.”

This past Monday morning my first phone call of the day was from Brian Benfer. In case you haven't heard Brian's name before, he is the motorized parachute pilot who, on nearly a daily basis, videos the progress of the Central Susquehanna Valley Thruway construction.

Brian is a member of your Chambers Transportation Committee. His participation on this committee gave him some insight into when the initial beams might be placed which would carry the Thruway traffic across Grangers Road in Monroe Township, Snyder County.

This phase of the massive bridge started first thing Monday morning. Please note that the current phase will take approximately the next two weeks and necessitate regular 15-minute closures of Granger’s Road. It would be ideal if everything except for very local traffic would find an alternative route during this phase of the project.

The purpose of Brian's call was a request to contact someone at PennDOT to see if he might be given permission to video the beam erection. After contacting our key PennDOT liaison, Matt Beck, Brian was able to get the go ahead. The result is the photo above and this embedded video (https://www.facebook.com/CSVTAerialPics/videos/1338377897549859). Both of which give you some idea of the complexity of building these types of bridges as well as serving as a testament to Brian’s videographic skills.

Hope that you will take a moment to enjoy this informative video as we all keep in mind that by working together, our best days lie just ahead.
