From Where I Sit…

As we get closer to our March 25th Annual Economic Forecast with Dr. Anirban Basu I took some liberties and had a little bit of fun with this week’s radio ad. Reaching deeply into my bag of tricks recalling an old quote uttered by Vice President Spiro Agnew.
At the time, probably the early 1970s, the Vice President was referring to the media. I, on the other hand, focused on the rough-and-tumble of modern political campaigns. Speaking of forecasts, we’re told that soon a barrage of no less than a billion dollars in political campaign commercials, overwhelmingly negative, will come crashing down upon us.
Invariably, brought to us by those “negative, nabobs of negativism” (thank you Spiro) who conduct ‘tear-up my opponent/say nothing about my qualifications’ political campaigns. This onslaught may lead you to think that our economy is far worse than it is.
My point, my invitation is: Please tune into your Chamber’s 16th Annual Economic Forecast, listen carefully to Dr. Anirban Basu and his data-driven, evidence-based, time-tested economic information that we all can really use.
Well, here goes what I had to say in this week's radio ad:
“Thank you for taking a break for this Chamber Minute. It’s Bob Garrett, your Chamber’s President & CEO. Given that things are heating up politically—brace yourself for tons of chatter. We’re about to be bombarded by nasty ads produced by those nattering, nabobs of negativism who predictably will mash up the economic news and make it unrecognizable.
Here’s my advice: Tune it out.
Instead, join the smart, wise folks who will tune in, take some notes, and lean in on March 25th. Dr. Anirban Basu will be back that day for his 16th appearance and economic prognostication.
For this forecast, we’ll cut through the chatter, knock off the negative jibber-jabber, and roll out the data. Economic information that you need—nothing more/nothing less.
Pre-registration is required, save your seat at GSVCC.org.
Working together, our best days lie just ahead.”
All the best,
Bob Garrett
