Tomorrow, your Chamber heads to the ‘links’ for a day of fun, fellowship, and possibly a few far-flung golf balls. As our 2023 Golf Classic wraps up on Friday afternoon, the day’s champions and award winners will be announced, a delicious dinner of Knoebel’s ‘Golden Ticket Winning’ bar-be-que chicken with all the fixins’ will be enjoyed, and we will head off to get our weekends started. A great day for everyone, no doubt.
But the really big winners at the Golf Classic will be the 2024 Class of Young Americans. The Golf Classic is the main fundraiser for this program. It’s also your Chamber’s longest established program, now getting close to 60 years in existence. What’s more, we believe that this annual recognition of the best-and-brightest High School Seniors is the longest running program, of its type, in all of Pennsylvania.
You likely know that Young Americans are featured with a biographical sketch which appears weekly in The Daily Item and on the stations of the Sunbury Broadcasting Company. Typically, these Young Americans also receive some recognition from their schools ranging from assemblies to hallway posters to acknowledgement of their achievement during graduation festivities and events.
What you may not know is that the more than 100 Young Americans also are invited each year to a day-long leadership program. During this day they listen to leadership speeches, do hands-on exercises related to sound personal finances, and get to interact with students from 13 other Greater Susquehanna Valley public, private, and vocational schools.
Zach Stotter, your Chamber’s Director of Membership and Workforce Development is the lead Young Americans staffer. You might find interesting to note that Zach is a former Young American himself. Any comments, concerns, questions, or offers to assist with this program may be directed to Zach at zstotter@gsvcc.org.
What can be sure that with this class of Young Americans…our best days lie just ahead.
