An Ode to a Farmer’s Market
Paul Harvey, I’m not. However, here’s my annual paean, possibly a sonnet, not yet ready for hip-hop, an ‘ode’ for sure to our valley’s various and many, and let’s hope and pray ever-growing Farmer’s Markets.
With county fairs abound, summer-y weather,
A bountiful harvest of garden fruits,
Will fill our market baskets to the brim,
Enjoying our leisurely stroll through,
Our many hometown Farmers Markets throughout,
The wide Greater Susquehanna Valley.
A bounty of good, healthy, local food,
All grown right here in our verdant corner,
Of this big beautiful blue marble Earth.
This goodly agriculture heritage,
Of farms, fields, forests, and streams of which we,
Celebrate, with a cheery hello to,
Friends both longtime and new, reminding them:
“Eat local, bring your own bag, have a nice day.”

Well, I warned you, not Pulitzer Prize winning, but sincere, none the less. While I have your attention, may I please one other point of distinction of agricultural excellence, here in our valley: Community Supported Agriculture (or simply CSAs, for short). Just received this note earlier this week from Caroline and David Owens of Owens Farm CSA. They’re looking for ‘early investors’ who might be interested in securing their locally-grown Thanksgiving Turkeys this year. Here’s the note from the Owens, as I received it, equipped with built-in hyperlink to order your turkey(s) right now:

You Can Reserve Your Thanksgiving Turkey Now!
No pop-up thermometer, no barcode, no 'butter-flavor' solution...now that's a bird who deserves a place on your holiday table!
We are raising one group of turkeys this year, timed to be ready for Thanksgiving.  All will be sold on a pre-order basis. They will be butchered and ready for you to pick up the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, which is Nov. 21, 2023. These are the familiar broad-breasted white breed of turkey.  They roam our pastures, thriving on non-GMO feed supplemented with delicious plants and insects. We do not add chemicals, hormones, antibiotics, or funky growth enhancers to our feed, nor do we inject a butter-flavored solution like so many found in the grocery store. These birds are truly the perfect centerpiece to your family feast!

HOW TO ORDER
Orders are open now.  To reserve a turkey, put down a $10 deposit online

PRICING
The final price will be calculated at $5.95 per pound minus your deposit. We expect the dressed weights to range between 15 and 25 pounds, making the total cost between $89 and $148. There are normally some 'whoppers' for big families.

PICK-UP
Pick-up will be the afternoon and evening of Tuesday, Nov. 21 here at Owens Farm. The birds will be fresh and bagged, ready for your refrigerator till the big day.
