From Where I Sit

“Real heroes don’t wear capes. Real superheroes are there when you need them, respond to your calls, and assure you that help is on its way.”

This week, I wanted to use this column to call out the good work of our first, first responders.

Have you given any thought recently to who the person behind our emergency calls to 911 might be? Honestly, I hadn’t either. In large part this is because we all have an inherent belief that if-or-when we make one of those frantic calls to 911 there will be a caring, cool, informed voice on the other end ready and willing to help.

Frankly, for most of us, all we know about this person is their voice. Keeping with the spirit of National Public Safety Telecommunications Week (NPSTW), which is observed annually the second full week of April, a heartfelt thanks, thanks, and a million times thanks to our valley’s emergency telecommunicators.

We recognize and celebrate the work which telecommunicators do every moment and of every day. Literally, these professionals stand-by and save millions of lives every day of the year. If it weren’t for the telecommunicators flawlessly doing their jobs, countless lives would have been lost due to untimely assistance. So, throughout this week, we honor and thank those invisible, to most of us, telecommunicators who have continued to serve in this demanding profession.

Thank you for a job well done.

Please let me wrap up with a couple of quick invitations. This morning, beginning at 9 am, One Million Cups rolls onto the campus of Susquehanna University. This ‘entrepreneur connectivity/connectivity’ showcase will be held in the Innovation Center located inside of the Blough-Weis Library. There’s also a virtual link in case you can’t make it onto campus this morning.

Tomorrow, Wednesday, April 12th at 12 Noon is our next in a series of Women’s Leadership (virtual) Lunch-and-Learns. The presenter is Robin Skrine, MD speaking about breast health. This Lunch-and-Learn is sponsored by Geisinger.

Later this month, on April 27th, the Community Prosperity Lunch-and-Learn will be held at the Albright Center in Sunbury. The focus of the discussion will be emerging issues related to downtown and Main Street redevelopment with a focus on what’s going on in Sunbury. The event begins at 11:30 am, and it’s in-person, with a delicious lunch being offered.

Finally, our next big premier event is: The 102nd Annual Meeting and Awards Ceremony coming up on May 11th. We’re returning to the Pine Barn Inn in Danville this year. Come out to cheer on the Business of the Year, Small Business of the Year, Heritage and Star of Excellence awardees, Young Professional of the Year, and other recognitions.

Registration and many more details for each of these events is available at gsvcc.org.
