From Where I Sit…

First, please let me begin with a heartfelt invitation for you, your colleagues, heck bring the whole family, to this afternoon’s Grand Re-Opening Reception, Tour, and Ribbon Cutting at the Selinsgrove Inn. Our good friends, and long-time Chamber members, Scott and Melanie Shaffer are handing over the ownership of the Inn to Celso and Margarida Leite. These new innkeepers are very familiar with providing the very best in customer service and our valley is thrilled to welcome them.

Festivities run from 4:30 to 7:00 pm and we’re hoping that a large crowd is on hand to welcome these new business owners and Chamber members. Domenico and Stacy from Isabella’s are providing a wonderful reception for everyone stopping by, so you’ll want to come by early and stay until the very end.

Celso and Margarida represent a time-tested and much beloved tradition of being a ‘Mom & Pop Business.’ With this in mind, their timing couldn’t be any more perfect as today is National Mom & Pop Business Owners Day.

I kid you not, started way back in 1939 and on every March 29th since, this date has been set aside to celebrate, honor, and recognize Mom & Pop business owners and all that they do for our economy.

Small businesses, which would include most Mom & Pop type operations are the engine of economic growth and vitality in every American community. What’s more, they provide about 70% of all new jobs nationally. This is their special day of the year for their customers and hopefully their future customers to appreciate the long hours, hard work, and dedication that it takes to run a small business.

If you’re thinking, “How can I best show my appreciation to a few of the Mom & Pop businesses where I love shopping, patronizing, and visiting?” here are three ideas for your consideration:
  1. Shop Local – supporting the small businesses where you live, work, and play with your purchases is the very best thing that you can do to show your appreciation. Search out and frequent these businesses. Once you’ve wrapped up your shopping, tell everyone about it because word-of-mouth is still the best marketing tool to guarantee small business survival.
  2. Post on Social Media – Like and follow your favorite small businesses on all of your social media platforms. This simple action builds a ripple effect of more and more customers, which can only be good for business.
  3. Say “Thank You” – Running a Mom & Pop business is hard work. If there’s a special small business which you really care about and want to see survive and thrive, please consider taking a moment to say “Thanks.” The impact this small gesture of goodwill can make on the business owners and their employees could be immeasurable. Your affirmation of a job well done could very well be the tipping point to assuring that your favorite Mom & Pop Business will be around for many years to come.
Hoping to see you tonight at the Selinsgrove Inn and at Mom & Pop Shops all over the valley.

Remember, our best days lie just ahead.
