Community College Month Wraps Up with Major Wins for the Greater Susquehanna Valley

As April comes to a close, so does our celebration of Community College Month—a time dedicated to recognizing the vital role that community colleges play in education, workforce development, and community advancement. Here in the Greater Susquehanna Valley, we are proud to report that we finished strong with several key milestones that underscore the importance and growing impact of community colleges in our region.

One of the month's highlights was a special event hosted by the CentralPA Chamber featuring Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday. During his remarks—covered extensively by The News-Item—Attorney General Sunday made a powerful endorsement of the value of community colleges. He emphasized how these institutions not only create accessible pathways to education but also contribute to building stronger, safer communities. His message resonated deeply, affirming the critical role that community colleges play in lifting individuals and entire communities toward greater opportunity and prosperity.

Adding to the momentum, the Luzerne County Community College (LCCC)–Greater Susquehanna Center in Watsontown helped inspire a significant community development: the establishment of a weekly CSO Mobile Food Bank site right in the heart of Watsontown. This achievement was celebrated with a red carpet ribbon cutting event, which was attended by community leaders, volunteers, and LCCC staff. Most impressively, the inaugural distribution day saw the largest number of families served since the inception of the mobile food bank—setting a new standard for outreach and impact in the Valley.

Further demonstrating LCCC’s commitment to serving our region, the LCCC Greater Susquehanna Center’s Local Advisory Committee convened this week for an important session with LCCC President John Yudichak and other key college administrators. This meeting provided a crucial opportunity for local leaders to share insights and feedback directly with college leadership, ensuring that the Center’s programs continue to align with the evolving needs of our local workforce and communities.

The success of these initiatives reminds us that community colleges are so much more than centers of learning. They are anchors of hope, innovation, and service. By bringing education, community service, and leadership development together, our local community colleges continue to strengthen the very fabric of the Greater Susquehanna Valley.

As we conclude Community College Month, we look forward with optimism. Thanks to the strong partnerships and dedicated leadership we’ve seen on display throughout April—and every day—our community is better positioned than ever for growth and success.

By working together, our best days lie just ahead.
