Television was a rare commodity around my boyhood home. My parents had little time for the distractions that came along with the tube, but on Saturday evenings my family would gather as my father lifted our locally made Philco black-and-white TV out of its cabinet for the latest episode of Gunsmoke. During our recent ‘Rise & Shine it’s Better Normal Time,’ the 1960s commercial titled ‘Don’t Forget: Hire the Vet’ kept ringing in my ears. Now days, we’ve modernized and simplified the language a bit to ‘Hire Heroes,’ but the message is the same: America’s veterans make great employees.
