Annual Young Americans Leadership Seminar

Selinsgrove, Pa: The Young Americans program held its Annual Leadership Seminar on Tuesday, April 18th at Susquehanna University. Thirty area high school seniors participated in the event and were presented seminar topics including Career Development, Stress Management, Fraud Prevention, and Community Development. Students also received a presentation on “Backyard Tourism” from SRVVB Executive Director and were invited to explore the Susquehanna River Valley before pursuing their post-secondary goals.

Students enjoyed interactive presentations in which they were asked to analyze some of the strengths and opportunities in their local communities and be mindful of how their own leadership could help be a solution to the areas in need of improvement. Students also took advantage of the opportunity to network and engage with other area seniors who come from different school districts. Presenters, facilitators, and participating school staff were all impressed with the professionalism of the students, as well as the thoughtfulness in which they approached their responses to often complicated questions.

Young Americans are selected by teachers and staff monthly throughout the school year as outstanding seniors for both their academic and extra-curricular achievements. Participating schools include: Danville Area High School, Lewisburg Area High School, Line Mountain Area High School, Meadowbrook Christian School, Midd-West High School, Mifflinburg Area High School, Northumberland Christian School, Selinsgrove Area High School, Shikellamy High School, and SUN Area Technical School.

In addition to the Leadership Seminar, Young Americans are recognized in the Daily Item, the stations of Sunbury Broadcasting, and the Voice of the Valley. Young Americans and their families, as well as local school personnel and the business community are also invited to a Recognition Reception on May 25th, to be held at Susquehanna University. At this event, students will hear from a Young American alumnus, receive a citation, and learn the results of the Young American scholarship essay contest.
